Founded on the simple notion that every animal deserves to be treated with compassion and care, the Maryland Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MD SPCA) has been improving the lives of pets and people for the past 150 years. On January 23, a group of volunteers from Blue Ocean spent the day with this remarkable organization, helping in small but important ways to fulfill their mission.
Fifteen Blue Ocean team members participated in this voluntary community partnership event with the Maryland SPCA. According to Alex Ehrenfeld, Director of Community and Investor Relations, “We cleaned the organization’s transport van and the dogs’ kennels, and made some treats for all the pups. At the end of the day, we got to tour the shelter and meet the dogs and cats. We were also pleased to make a generous donation to this incredible organization.”
Even the Blue Ocean volunteers who were aware of the MD SPCA’s work in the community were surprised by the sheer volume of the organization’s efforts. The MD SPCA adopts out more than 3,500 needy and abandoned pets each year. In addition, they also bring in more than 1,400 animals from other shelters to help save even more lives in the community. The organization’s Spay and Neuter Clinic also performs approximately. 7,000 surgeries each year–making them the state leader in providing this crucial service.
Partnering with community non-profits to provide financial support and volunteer support is an integral part of Blue Ocean’s corporate culture. We would like to thank the MD SPCA for hosting us during this day of service, and look forward to our next community partnership event.
