Last month, work was completed on the façade of The Falls at Roland Park apartments in Baltimore, MD. The goal was to transform what was a highly visible blank wall into a modern art display celebrating the building’s history and prominence. This was achieved by enlisting the services of several local artists and engineers to first design, and then fabricate and install the massive yet delicate structure. The project, which stands over nine stories tall and includes over seventy metal angulating fins, began this spring and was a primary focus for Blue Ocean. “From the onset we knew the importance of changing the perception of the tens of thousands of daily passerbyers, residents, and would-be residents that an exciting and meaningful transformation was occurring at the community they have driven past time and time again” says Ethan Frey who led the project for Blue Ocean, “we are thrilled that the façade accomplishes just that”.

Ultimately, the undertaking was a tremendous success and exceeded the goal of bringing life to the large, mid-century building. Blue Ocean along with Younts Design, Elemental Works, and Triangle Sign and Service were more than able to overcome the significant challenges brought about by the remarkable scope of the project and various mechanical difficulties presented by the intricate installation. As Ronnie Younts, Principal and Creative Director at Younts Design explained, “It’s rare to be able to do something at this scale and with this importance, and with a client with the incredible foresight and determination of Blue Ocean.”

Today, the building boasts a true sense of movement intended to honor the Jones Falls waters. During the day natural sunlight plays off the expansive metal pieces mimicking giant waves of water, while at night extensive LED lighting achieves a similar dramatic nighttime experience through the illumination of strategically placed LED rope elements.

As Jonathan Ehrenfeld, President of Blue Ocean summarized, “A core component of what drives and empowers our team is the knowledge that we have the ability to make a positive impact on our community. The art project at The Falls is another example of what this means to Blue Ocean. The result in this case was the installation of an exceptional art-inspired façade that not only enhances The Falls, but the surrounding community as well.”
